Reflective Journal - Week 11
I am right along with Sean when it comes to change. I love it! It excites me and is something I am always seeking out. I do believe a solid foundational way of doing things is needed and good, but there are always ways to do things better! No matter what it is, there is always a way to do it better. It seems that with every task I do I am always running scenarios through my mind of how I can change it. I know this isn't the case with everybody. Some people enjoy clear cut direction and longevity so that they may perfect their skills and job. I completely understand this as well, but like Sean says, change is one of the only constants in the universe. Change must and will happen to adapt to our surroundings and way of life. Without change, we would all eventually fail.
Often times introducing change is difficult in the workplace. Many people have done things one way their entire career and then they are asked to adapt to a new way. This can obviously be difficult for many. For change to be successful management must be at the forefront of it and some employees must spearhead the change. Without support, change will fail miserably. In situations of large change, the group must be sat down and presented the benefits and reasons in a compelling way. Having everyone understand and buy into the reasons for change will always result in a more successful transition. Things such as bedside report seem like a nuisance to me, but when you delve into the reasons for change you begin to realize the benefits and eventually desire the results of the change.
In the "Who Moved My Cheese?" analogy, it is a bit difficult to pick one specific character and all of their traits to represent me. Being forced to do so, I would pick Sniff. The description of him that said "Sniff will smell out the general direction of the cheese," I believe describes me well. I feel that I am often searching for this cheese. What nourishes me and makes me happy seems to change somewhat frequently and with that change comes the necessity to require that satisfaction. I often am searching out new outlets in my career, hobbies, and interests. When one thing runs dry, I am often off to the next one, usually finding it quickly and successfully. When I have secured something that I desire and wish to nourish, I do so. I am sure to keep tabs on it and to ensure it is not running low and/or getting old. If I notice that it is, I begin to prepare for the coming change that will require me to once again seek out new things. A lot was said about Sniff relying on instinct rather than studying and learning, I feel that I am somewhere in between. I often pursue many things based on a hunch, but in that pursuit, I try to educate myself and learn as much as I can about what it is that I am pursuing.
I feel that this analogy was a great learning opportunity! It helped me recognize some of my strengths as well as some of my weaknesses. For as much as I enjoy change, constant changes also never give a strong foundation or a place to build around. I recognize that maybe I do need to focus more on settling down rather than living opportunity to opportunity. Eventually, I know that a more secure and structured life will be more enjoyable than my current focus. I plan on beginning to ensure I do have that security that I have neglected up until now. These were great learning opportunities for me and I feel like I will always have an image of these little men running around a maze while pondering my future decisions. I enjoyed this weeks learning!
